Ringworm is a common infection of the skin that can be found both at humans and animals, particularly cats, that are the most common ringworm carriers. Though its name suggests that it’s caused by a worm, in reality it’s caused by a fungus, which grows on the skin and feeds with the dead skin and hair cells there. The parts of the skin that are infected with ringworm are typically spherical, and that they have a red color at their edges, but in their center the skin appears almost normal. The red areas are formed like a ring and they are also swelling because the fungus irritates the skin, therefore the place appears like a red spherical worm. This is where the name ringworm comes from.  The symptoms of ringworm can be seen on the skin surface. A doctor will diagnose ringworm just by taking a glance at the infected areas. In some cases a more thorough analysis has to be made to see the nature of the fungus, the doctor could take a small sample of skin tissue from the places wherever the fungus grows. In the beginning, ringworm seems like a little pimple or insect bite. Then it starts to grow as the fungus begins to evolve and spread. If hair grows within the area then the infected place can lose it, therefore red bald patches of skin can appear. Some patients even have a yellow crust over the infection. As ringworm progresses the areas get larger and that they begin to be formed like a ring. The skin in those areas is usually itchy and soon more red patches can appear if it’s not treated. depending on where the symptoms appears ringworm is named ringworm of the groin, ringworm of the scalp,  or athlete’s foot if it seems on the feet.

The treatment for ringworm is simple, particularly if the doctors discover it early. If there are only some places with the fungus, then the doctor can prescribe you an antifungal cream. These ointments may be purchased without a prescription but it is best to ask the doctor before deciding to use one. The cream should be applied directly on the infected skin until the  ringworm disappear and a few days after to make sure all the fungus cells are dead. But if ringworm has spread to several areas then antifungal pills are needed to cure it. Pills usually taken once a day and that they are pretty strong so the result should be seen during a few days. It is easy to cure ringworm, however first you need to recognize it from its symptoms and visit a doctor for accurate diagnosis as soon as you see any signs of it. If you would like to prevent it, continually wash and clean yourself and avoid using things that are regularly used by many people.
