Ringworm is a contagious disease which is caused by the tinea virus. And is also called tinea after these virus. It may affect the scalp, body, feet or nails. Ringworm may be catch from direct or indirect contact and even from a contact with the soil. The infection can be treated easily. There are many treatments that might help in killing fungus. In order to prevent ringworm, people should make sure that infected persons and pets get proper treatment immediately. It is recommended for healthy people not to get in contact with infected persons and not to share personal items.
A group of fungus organisms called Dermatophytes is the one responsible for the development of ringworm. Dermatophytes affect different parts of the human body causing different types of ringworm such as body ringworm, scalp ringworm, foot ringworm and nails ringworm. The fungi that causes ringworm can be present in humans, animals and soil.
Ringworm can be develop after direct contact to infected person or animals. It can also be catch through indirect contact like using personal things of infected person or in rare cases after soil contact.
Scalp ringworm starts as a small pimple, until it becomes larger and larger leading to scaly patches of temporary baldness. Usually, the hair that is infected becomes fragile and usually breaks off.
Body ringworm starts as a round patch anywhere on the body, except feet and scalp. Ringworm in the groin area is the most common body infection. The patches usually expands and its center is clear forming a ring-shaped. In groin ringworm more than one patch may appear in the area that becomes itchy.
Foot ringworm occurs between the toes, and is also known as athlete’s foot.
Nail ringworm causes disintegrated or chalky nails. The nails also changes its color to white or yellow and sometimes thickened.
The infection may occur after 4 to 14 days of contact, depending on the type of ringworm. For scalp ringworm symptoms appear after more than 10 days, while body ringworm occurs in less than 10 days. Though sometimes 4 days are enough for the rash to appear.
Everybody can develop ringworm. Most of the cases were seen in schools or nurseries. Athletes are more prone to ringworm. And among athletes outbreaks have been seen among high school wrestling teams.
Ringworm can be clear up if immediate and proper treatment is applied. If not it may spread and become chronic.
